THE SECOND NUMBER OF MAN RIDDLE.

September 22, 2012

Well, it could be said that it is the first “number of man riddle”, because it comes before the famous one of Revelation 13:18. It is exactly the same riddle, with exactly the same answer, but this time God did not give us any clues, He did not even say that it was a riddle, so no one tried to solve it: they didn’t even know that it is there.

The riddle is (Jude 1:14 NIV) ”Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones”

I have heard no one else say, this verse is a riddle, however it certainly is. If you have not read the post “HERE IS THE NUMBER OF MAN” on this web site, then please do so. If you choose not too, then you cannot understand that this is the same riddle, with the same answer.

If you count the linage of Enoch, as men count linage, Enoch is the sixth from Adam. The linage is Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, and then Enoch (Gen. 5:3-18, Luke 3:37&38, 1 Chron 1:1-3). We would not count Adam, because the verse is seventh “from” Adam. Seth is the first from Adam, so Enoch is the sixth from Adam, as man counts linage.

The verse says that Enoch is the seventh from Adam and because it is Scripture and Scripture cannot be broken, we know that God meant just what He said, so we have (At least I have) always just assumed that Enoch was the seventh from Adam, because the verse says he is, but as man counts linage he is the sixth. However God’s numbers do not always match man’s numbers, because God is not always counting the same items that man is counting.

This is born out when we consider the seven days of creation. The sun was not made until the third day. The sun governs our days (man’s days), so it is obvious the three days, spoken of before the sun was made, are not man’s days. There is no sign that the days change in time, so all seven days are the same length, or kind of days. This is also reaffirmed when the seventh day is described. It is the day that God will enter His rest, but God has yet to enter His rest (John 5:17), so we are still in the sixth of God’s days. The days or items that God is counting in Geneses are not the same days or items that we have been counting. We have been counting the days as man’s 24 hour days, but they are God’s days and are equal to thousands of years of man’s days.

God did not leave out Abel in the linage of Enoch, because He was counting the sons of Adam not the linage of Adam. That makes Enoch the seventh in the line of Adam, as God counts. He doesn’t count Cain, because Cain went out from the presence of the Lord (Gen 4:16).

Can you see the same riddle with the same answer?

Enoch was the first person that it is said, walked with God, and that God took. One can say that Enoch is the symbol of everyone that God will take (Heb 11:5). He is a six that God added one to (a spirit, or one that was no longer a man) and that made him a seven: the number of completion.

Abel had been slain by his brother and his blood cried out to God from the ground (Gen 4:10). Abel was a spirit and no longer a man. Jesus was a brother that was slain by his brothers, a Spirit, no longer a man, and His blood cries out to God, though not for himself, but for us. Are you beginning to see the symbolism?

It is said that Seth was born in the image of Adam (Gen 5:3). It is not said that Abel was born in the image of Adam. I am going to step, perhaps a bit farther than I should, but it seems to me that Abel was born in the image of Christ. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, just as He looks with favor on Jesus and his offering for our sins.
(Yes, I am aware that many of you think that I always step a bit farther than I should)

We are all “six” until we ask God for “the one” and when we do He will add the Holy Spirit to us and make us complete: a seven. Then, if we endure (2 Tim 2:12), He will take us to live with Him forever.

Keep in mind that Enoch and especially Abel are only symbolic in the riddle. If they were the real thing then it would not be symbolic, or even a riddle.

For those who do right, by not accepting what I say, I would ask why Enoch is said to be seventh from Adam and yet all other verses list linage that shows him sixth? If you have no answer, then ask the teacher. You have the same teacher that I have. Take advantage and use the teacher that God has given us (John 14:26, 1 John 2:27). Perhaps He will give you a better understanding than He has given me, or perhaps you will grasp what He means better than I have. If He does please share it with this fellow student.
